I was reading that elements of L&H are going to be designed into a dsp chip from SGS Thompson, the giant semiconductor maker. The idea being that they can put these specialized DSP's into many devices. There have also been posts talking about Siemens using Fonix for a DSP to do the same. I should think Ericsson may be motivated to work with L&H because they don't want to use Siemens products and they may have a long standing relationship with STM. I should think we'd see more agreements between chip makers such as TI, ADI, IBM and Lucent with Speech Recognition. Anyway, Portico is not a Speech Recgonition engine. As it stands, Portico will work with no special hardware. That's the point. All people with a phone, be it cellular (CDMA, GSM, TDMA, Digital, Analog) or land based, or a pay phone in the lobby of a hotel can use portico. I would think you can even use a rotary dial phone for that matter. In fact, the way that Portico really resides independently of cell phones has always made me wonder why they need a relationship to cell phone companies? Surely cell phone providers will gain from increasing usage, but the Portico service has no loyalty to the phone. I plan to sign up and use the service from my home phone. I don't have a cell phone.
