Actualy I think MSFT and US Steel is a better comparison.
In the same analogy, I think DELL would be GM and CPQ would be Ford.

Remember, you have to get the date right for this to work.

Oh yea, and the current companies are only a small fraction of the US economy compared to what US steel, GM and Ford were at their peak.

I am using US Steel as a metaphore for the supply companies of the automakers. Ford was the biggest auto company and was surpased by GM under Sloan's management.
