Youlu, good points. The other item people sometimes overlook is that in addition to the plethora of backbone build-outs currently underway, we have not even entered the stage of upgrades brought about by the 'opening' of the last mile. When cable modems and xDSL finally get to the curb, all edge equipment will have to be replaced and in the case of xDSL, DSLAMs which multiplex the data to the WAN, will be used in conjunction with ATM to move the data to the WAN. In addition, cable data has to get from the settop box to the headend over the HFC in as efficient manner as possible. Again, ATM is ideal for the transmission of video, data, voice.

How about wireless voice and data? The base stations that convert the radio frequency waves to wireline backhaul pipes use PMC data link controllers and ATM chips to provide the interface and processing for these large pipes.

In fact in almost any application where data and voice are being converged and multiplexed from the LAN, Remote Access or customer premise (whether thats ATM, IP over SONET, ATM over SONET etc), PMC usually has a presence (or will) of somekind.

I feel like a broken record and maybe sound like an investor looking to rationalize his investment. But the facts are too strong - everywhere you look, the market is heading towards PMC's chips.
