Mike - I agree. LU adding proprietary features to IS-95 is potentially very bad news. Luckily I don't think LU has quite enough lead over IS-95 B&C, and they aren't quite a big enough player to balkanize the market. It is likely that they just wasted a bunch of money. At the risk of a verbal thrashing from Maurice, Microsoft v. Java is a prime example - it is reasonably clear from MSFT internal memos that Microsoft is trying to kill Java by balkanizing it, but even with all of their muscle they are having a hard time (although they may still succeed given time, alas!).

Besides the arguement that Clark makes, for the data feature to be useful they would have to have phones that supported it. If they can't get it standardized I would think that it would be hard for a company to make phones that would use this feature.
