Pfizer Sued for $255 Mln by 3 More Men Who Claim Viagra Risks Bloomberg News July 20, 1998, 3:53 p.m. ET Pfizer Sued for $255 Mln by 3 More Men Who Claim Viagra Risks New York, July 20 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc., the second- largest U.S. drugmaker, was sued for a combined $255 million in three lawsuits filed by men who claim they suffered heart attacks after using the company's Viagra impotence drug, the plaintiffs' lawyer said. The three separate suits filed in New York State Supreme Court claim Pfizer was negligent and showed a ''reckless disregard for the safety'' of people who would use Viagra. The suits also claim the company failed to warn customers of health hazards. Robert Selig, 59, Jerald Sossner, 58, and Charles Worrell, 42, all claim to have suffered heart attacks after using the impotence drug. Their wives are also listed as plaintiffs. A similar lawsuit was filed last week by a 63-year-old man who suffered a heart attack five days after he began using Viagra, in what is believed to be the first such lawsuit filed by a Viagra user, said Ronald Benjamin, his attorney. Benjamin is also the attorney for the three plaintiffs in today's suits. Pfizer ''knew or should have known ... that Viagra is an unreasonably dangerous product and nevertheless manufactured and placed (Viagra) into the stream of commerce,'' lawyers said in the lawsuits. Officials of New York-based Pfizer said they hadn't seen the suits and couldn't immediately comment. U.S. physicians have written more than 2.7 million prescriptions for the $10-a-pill drug since its introduction in April. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had received 16 reports of deaths in men who had taken Viagra as of June 8. After last week's suit was filed, Pfizer said in a statement that ''this case appears to be more in the nature of lawyers' advertising than good-faith litigation.'' Viagra is a safe medicine when used as suggested, Pfizer said. Pfizer rose 2 1/4 to 118 in late trading. --William McQuillen in the New York State Supreme Court (212) 233-
