Peru: Government adopts guidelines to fight back software piracy

Peruvian industrial property institute Indecopi is detailing for the
public the copyright bill that regulates the proper use of software,
fighting back a widespread piracy. Indecopi is not a legislative body
but rather will implement the law. One of the key points is the rules
for the local use of software purchased abroad, and the uses of
Internet software. Indecopi is concentrating in the corporate segment
where it reports a 60% of software piracy, a figure lower than the 98%
rate registered in 1993. Meanwhile, the alliance of Oracle and Novell
has good prospects in the Peruvian market. Novell reports a 40% growth
over the last three quarters
, and Oracle grew 60% in the last year
(1997) predicting a 30% growth in 1998 to sales of US$10mil. Oracle
has 240 databak users, and 10 applications & solutions users each
generating an average income of US$800,000.
