I think we are talking apples and oranges here again. Actually manufacturing the chip versus embedding the core of the chip on an IC or motherboard are two different things.

This doesn't sound like the same deal as SMSC.

I am not sure the reference to NSM in that "Toll Booth" piece was accurate even way back when it was written. Steven Sprague has on later occasion mentioned OKI as the manufacturing contractor.
