<<People like to buy stocks in round lots. They may not have enough money to buy 100 share of a stock that is over $100 a share.>>

There used to be a price and/or commission advantage in buying stocks in round lots (multiples of 100). This is no longer the case, but many investors may think that it still is.

More importantly, many otherwise very intelligent investors think that a stock is too "expensive" when it reaches a "high" price. After it splits, such investors think that they are getting a better deal. As long as certain investors think this is the case, their perception will affect their investing habits and therefore, to some degree, the demand for the stock and its resultant price.
