In the mid-late '80s, the mask generators were a number of years ahead of the minimum feature size roadmap. Today, I believe there is no gap as evidenced by the fact that Etec can not ship new tools fast enough.

We Etec fans have a big benefactor - Microslop. They will keep cranking out shovelware and it will require faster and faster machines to execute. Coupled with the expansion of digital video, the capability (i.e., time-bandwidth product) of digital processors must increase dramatically. Consequently, the silicon real estate will become more dense and I see a bright future for Etec for the next several years unless management screws up (as I've said before, the managers seem relatively untested). Even if the fabs are hard pressed for a long time, they will have no choice but to upgrade their mask generation tools.

Here is an interesting post from Carl Johnson, the respected head of Infrastructure. He notes that DPI purchased a system from Hitachi to keep ETEC honest, so remember that UTEK is not the only alternative source:
