I think current industry practice in the PC world is to rewrite, more or less, all commercial software every few years anyway. Look at the number of new lines of code reported to be in NT 5.0 relative to the total -- looks pretty much like a rewrite to me!

If doing it the old way involves a 50% rewrite every three years in order to stay competitive, and doing it the new way requires a 100% rewrite, but due to productivity improvements goes twice as fast, then I don't think there's a clear winner.
