To ALL,

Hopefully the CC will clarify the Westell relationship on the Lucent Anymedia platform. Again, why did DSC need to merge with Alcatel?

Lucent Technologies Reaches Agreement With SBC Communications Valued at up to $2.4 Billion to Expand Digital Network

MURRAY HILL, N.J., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) today announced a five-year strategic agreement with SBC Communications Inc.'s (NYSE: SBC - news) telephone subsidiaries valued at up to $2.4 billion for state-of-the-art switching telecommunications equipment, including Lucent's flagship 5ESS(R)-2000 AnyMedia Switch, to be deployed throughout SBC's seven-state territory.

Lucent's switching solution consists of advanced digital switching software and hardware designed to increase network capacity and enable SBC to offer a broader array of services in the future. SBC plans to deploy additional digital lines on Lucent's 5ESS Switch offices throughout its network during the five-year period.

Lucent's 5ESS Switch is the industry's most reliable switch and recently set new performance benchmarks for the industry, according to an analysis of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) quality report issued in April 1998.

''SBC is aggressively upgrading its network to take advantage of advances in technology so it can better accommodate its customers' changing demands,'' said Carly Fiorina, group president for Lucent's Global Service Provider business. ''We're proud to enter into a strategic agreement with SBC that significantly expands capacity, reduces costs and not only accelerates deployment of digital technology today, but also positions SBC for future advanced voice and data services.''
