I am long AMZN, but the shorts are not as you describe them. This stock should be down, if fundamental analysis worked-- but it does not. The arguments being made by the shorts are all the same arguments made against AOL. Two things matter-- the Brand and Psychology. The longs believe this company will have brand recognition the likes of which are enjoed by AOL.
