SEATTLE, July 21 (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc. on Tuesday
said it has entered into a pact with Intuit Inc. to be the
exclusive bookseller in the U.S. on Intuit's popular
Quicken.com Internet Web site.
The agreement, described only as a "multi-year,
multi-million dollar" deal, also makes Amazon.com the preferred
provider of books in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Shares of Amazon.com leapt 8-1/2 to 146 just after the open
on Tuesday.
Under the terms of the agreement, Amazon.com will receive
extensive placements on Quicken.com sites and provide
book-related editorial content, search capabilities and
promotions.
Amazon.com will also be promoted on the desktop within
select Quicken software, Intuit's personal finance software.
Separately, Amazon.com said it has signed an agreement with
PC maker Compaq Computer Corp. . which will place access
to Amazon.com in new shipments of Compaq Presario personal
computers.
