Nevertheless, Jim commonly uses the term 'commodity' in a disparaging manner. I suspect that what he means is that the product of one company is identical to the product of another -- like oil or table salt. If that's what he means he is clearly wrong. I suspect that he means that there isn't that much to distinguish the products from various vendors. In that sense you could call automobiles and airplanes commodities. Although I must confess that the notion of a Ferrari in that sense is a bit amusing.

I use it in the more general sense of economics -- anything that is traded is a commodity. There is no pejorative implication.
