BellSouth's XDSL rollout does not automatically exclude MSPG. Below is the text of a posting I put on both the Motley Fool & Yahoo boards in late May; thanks to SI's generous offer I can now post it here too. It is relevant to the current discussion because it contains a pointer to a newspaper article that states that both BellSouth and GTE plan to offer ADSL through other ISPs as well as their own.

Hi all,
Today's Raleigh News & Observer has a front page story about ADSL and cable modems. The article is well worth reading if you are unfamiliar with the technology. ADSL will be offered in Durham, NC in the summer with the rest of the "Triangle" to follow later. (The three geographic points of the Triangle are Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.) The article is online at this URL:

search.news-observer.com

If that doesn't work, go to news-observer.com and search today's paper (5/25/98) for ADSL.

One item missing from the online version is a price chart. It compares Time Warner's cable modems with ADSL from GTE and BellSouth. I find it interesting because it is the first time I've seen real prices for these services as opposed to what someone thinks they will cost. I've done my best to summarize the chart below.

speed - TW - 1.5million bps (bits per second) to 30m bps
speed - GTE - 1.5m or 256k bps
speed - BellSouth - 1.5m bps
Installation $ - TW - unknown
Installation $ - GTE - $140 or $60 or DIY
Installation $ - BellSouth $99.95
Equipment cost - TW - unknown
Equipment cost - GTE - $300 or $12/month to lease modem
Equipment cost - BellSouth - $199.95
Monthly rate - TW - $40
Monthly rate - GTE - $150 for 1.5m bps; $60 for 256k bps
Monthly rate - BellSouth - $49.95 - $59.95
Available - TW - mid 1999
Available - GTE - June 98 A
vailable - BellSouth - Sept. 1998
WEb page - TW - rr.com
WEb page - GTE - gte.com
WEb page - BellSouth - bellsouth.net

A month or two ago I emailed MSPG about using ADSL and was told that in my area GTE's ADSL offering was going to be limited to AOL users although text in the N&O article would lead me to believe otherwise.

Peace,
Mr Bones
