Cytotekk - "OT" Global Warming: current scientific research, especially that taking place during the last several years has lended great support to the concept that Global Warming is a reality. In fact a very low percentage of researchers today will say that it is not occurring. The reality is that during the last 140 years...since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the global mean temperature has risen as a result of an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels. Based on numerous data sources, atmCO2 levels have been shown to have increased more than 30% in this time period. Global average surface temperatures are at least 1deg F (0.5deg C - for you Canadians) higher than in the 19th century and continues today.

No scientist can or will refute that over the course of earth history temperatures have flucuated as much as 20 deg C, however, the alarming thing is that none of those changes occurred in nearly as short a time period as is occurring today. We're talking thousands to hundreds of thousands of years vs. 100. Compounding and complicating this temperature rise is the speed with which CO2 levels hav increased. Current models show that if we stop using fossil fuels today our temperature and CO2 levels will continue to rise for next couple of decades, and would not return to pre-industrial levels until at least the late 21st to early 22nd century.

For more infomration, I refer you to an excellent text about Global Biogeochemical system called "Biogeochmistry - An Analysis of Global Change" by William Schlessinger - new edition last year...ther's something there for everyone. Also, the are numerous Web Sites devoted to the topic - search on Global Warming and go to any NOAA or university based site for more info...

It's certainly not something we need to panick about, but we really need to start paying attention to factors causing these changes...
