Shorts better not be naked - Datek has enough regulatory problems without adding this to the list.

My best guess is that due to their large customer base they plus their clearing house firm (I don't know who they use) probably have enough of everything on margin with their own customers that they don't have to go out and borrow from other firms.

I don't use Datek, so I have no basis for comparing their short list to the ones I have available to me automatically with my on-line broker.

I cant speak to how other firms get shorts stock. I can tell you this, Datek and whomever they clear through probably do not have large hedge funds or other institutions as clients so they dont have large pools of stock. Since we clear through Pershing, which clears for about 300 firms, we have a great short availability through Pershing or DLJ, Pershing's parent.
