The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, July 22, 1998 edition that
Alberta Securities regulators have accused two senior officers of Cartaway
Resources and a former First Marathon Securities official of misleading the
public two years ago by issuing a news release saying the company had found
indications of nickel. The Globe's Karen Howlett writes that the May 16,
1996, news release caused a sharp run-up in Cartaway's share price.
However, the bubble burst when Cartaway announced drilling results the
following day that showed little promise for a mineral find on the property
near the Voisey's Bay nickel discovery in Labrador. The shares plunged to
$2.76 from $26 on the Alberta Stock Exchange. Alberta regulators say the
release was prepared by Cartaway president John Ivany, a lawyer who has
spent his career in mining. Walter Nash, Cartaway's vice-president of
exploration, was the only person accused of illegal insider trading in
connection with Cartaway. Michael Stuart was the First Marathon employee
involved with the release.
