SEATTLE, July 21 (Reuters) - RealNetworks Inc sales were
strong "across the board" in the latest quarter, president
Bruce Jacobsen said Tuesday after the Internet software company
reported results that were stronger than expected.
RealNetworks posted second-quarter revenues of $15.1
million, up 115 percent from year-earlier levels and lost $2.1
million or $0.07 a share, compared with a loss of $2.7 million
or $0.12 last year.
On average analysts had expected a net loss of 10 cents a
share for the latest quarter, according to First Call.
"We are continuing to perform strongly in consumer sales ..
and we did particularly good work in the Real Broadcast
Network, where we host content for other people," Jacobsen said
in an interview.
The network is a joint venture with MCI Communications Corp
.
Jacobsen also said advertising revenues, while relatively
small, are growing rapidly.
"We're doing a good job in diversifying revenue streams and
adding ancillary service businesses," he said.
Jacobsen declined to comment on analyst estimates, which
have the company gradually cutting its losses until it breaks
even in late 1999.
Jacobsen said the company remains on track to release its
RealSystem G2 series of products by the end of the year.
RealNetworks said it has 27 million registered users of its
RealPlayer software and has recorded a total of 50 million
downloads of its products, ranking behind only the leading
Internet browsers from Netscape Communications Corp
and Microsoft Corp .
