Hi all, I use to be a regular here at SI in the "early" days. I came back to check on the stock range for S3. Very interested. I know you have all heard information about the savage chip (S3's answer to the 3d acceleration market) I'll tell you what. I was interested in buying stock in 3dfx when the voodoo chip was being recognized by hardcore techies in the usenet groups as the best 3d accelerator around. Back then place like CompUSA could care less for voodoo cards. Now, there the hottest add-on in the video card market. The newer games being developed today require heavy 3d acceleration. Voodoo cards are the standard by which all other 3d "game" accelerators are judged. It is becoming standard that new games require or will provide better image quality with 3d acceleration. Next time you pick up a game, look for the 3dfx symbol. Also, remember, that 3d acceleration can be done using direct3d and active x, This is the standard Microsoft is pushing it utilizes some sofware emulation. On the other side, is Glide - OpenGL this is a standard developed by the likes of Silicon Graphics. Many game programmers such as the highly respected John Carmack of ID software - Quake prefer OpenGL. There are cards on the market that provide fast Direct 3d acceleration, but not fast OpenGL. Some of these cards can't do OpenGL. Voodoo II can do both and fast! S3 and many others have missed the boat on this. Now, many companies are trying to develop a 2d/3d card combination that rivals a voodoo card in speed (frames per second, image quality) So far no one has developed a fast single card that provide voodoo speed and "equal" or better image quality. Now, however, both Matrox, S3 and some other video card companies will be coming out with there new products. The MAtrox Millenium G200 just came out. It's a hot card, but once again, It has yet to be seen how well it works in OPENGGL. Matrox still has yet to provide an OPENGL driver Oh well. Now S3 has there savage3d chip. Everything I am reading sounds like this is the dark horse ready to slaughter! I've seen screenshots of Quake II with this card and it is impressive. Looks better than Voodoo!, The only question now is the speed. If this thing can do 60 fps in 800 x 600 with that image quality I'm a buying! I'm hearing mixed reviews, but I know some hardcore voodoo addicts that are VERY curious about this chip. If the the chip performs up to par, You will wish you had bought this stock. I'm window shopping. Only time will tell! You want more info about vidoe cards and chips. Check the USENET groups. There's where winning products gain there underground reputation: comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video
