ARCO Gases Up With Datatec Systems

PR Newswire - July 22, 1998 10:04

Datatec to Install New POS Systems in ARCO-AM/PM Sites Throughout the Western United States

TOTOWA, N.J., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Datatec Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: DATC), a North American rapid deployment services provider, announced today it has been selected by ARCO (NYSE: ARC) to be the Company's primary Point-of-Sale (POS) cash register and in-store inventory and accounting systems deployment partner in over 800 AM/PM convenience stores. These stores are located throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada in 1998. Datatec's revenues from this project are expected to reach $3-4 million.

ARCO will be installing new POS systems as a part of a $40 million retail marketing automation project that began in 1997 and includes PayQuick and POS. The POS system creates a consistent base of software and hardware throughout the stores. This will improve each store's ability to support and service their customers, consolidate information and enhance overall store efficiency levels. After Datatec completed the initial installation at 25 AM/PM stores, ARCO chose the Company to be the primary installer for the remaining sites. At each site, Datatec will conduct a site survey, install the POS systems, network infrastructure, PCs and Pump Interface Equipment.

"Datatec has shown us that they will do whatever it takes to get the job done on time and done correctly," said Peter Riordan, Business Manager, Point of Sale Systems for ARCO. "With the ability to manage the logistics of a major project and yet still focus on individual store-level details, Datatec goes above and beyond the designated work assigned. That is what proved to us that they were the right ones to deploy the new POS systems."

"With over 20 years' experience in the deployment of POS systems and network installations, Datatec has built a solid reputation around its undivided attention to customer satisfaction," said Chris Carey, president of Datatec. "Datatec's proven deployment methodologies and national infrastructure to service complex, multi-site projects was a perfect fit for ARCO's major IT roll-out," Carey added.

ARCO Products Company, the marketing and refining division of ARCO, has more than 1,700 retail outlets in six western states -- Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, and British Columbia. ARCO's highly successful AM/PM franchise locations, which make up approximately 60 percent of the company's retail outlets, are full-scale convenience stores that also sell gasoline.
