PWC Safety/Regulation

First, as a number of people have noticed, so far the uproar over the safety of PWC's for the people using them and the people being run over by them on and near US beaches is, so far, a US phenomenon. Here in Connecticut, for example, it has been dealt with for the time being by requiring operators of jet-skis, etc, to obtain a "Boater Safety Certificate", which they also just started requiring for all boaters on state waters, just like drivers licenses. You have to attend safe boating classes (which are a joke, by the way) and then, for PWCs, stay for another class specifically for those (I've done both -- yawn). The irresponsible use of PWCs has led to injuries and death in many states and the reaction has ranged from licensing to rallies to ban them. As someone also pointed out, this varies from state to state.

Almost every time I opt to take my boat up the Connecticut River instead of out on the Sound or into the ocean, I get two or three jet-ski riders on my tail, taking turns jumping my wake. The closer the get to the transom of my boat, the better a jump they get, sometime launching themselves a good 30 feet through the air. It looks like a blast, to tell you the truth, but I am waiting for one of them to fly right into an on-coming yacht or each other. They would catch an extreme case of death if either of those things happened, and this is the kind of thing that has led to the threat of legislation, not an inherent lack of safety in the design of the products themselves.

Remember that this is something that is going on here in the US only. Nothing remotely like this is going on in Mexico or Latin America and I seriously doubt that it will, particularly in areas where the tourist industry is a strong component of the local economy.

The companies that are likely to deal with sales problems related to this situation are PII and ACAT and others that MANUFACTURE jet-skis and other types of PWC, because the US market for them is, typically, their largest and could be affected by these changes. Great White does not distribute these things in the US, hence there is nothing to fear.

There is no connection between these stories and sales prospects for Great White Marine.

Beware investor perceptions. FDA actions at this time really don't affect cigar companies, and yet their stocks are in the toilet, even though most of them are growing earnigs at fast, admirable rates, and have low valuations.

Somtimes the facts really don't matter.
