Companies which have significant seasonal variation in earnings sometimes use reserves to 'smooth earnings'. A smart CEO/CFO can then 'go to the well' when he needs to manage investor expectations. This approach takes some of the 'boom/bust' from the earnings roller coaster of THQI's seasonal cyclic sales pattern.

Could this be a partial explanation of the heavy reserve accumulation

Interesting to note in that link that institutional sponsorship is up to 54%. So they're not bothering to wait for the split, are they?
