some observations re 200mm wafer fab;

<<<<But in case they are starting from scratch, it takes upwards from 1 - 1.2 billion US to establish a worldclass 200mm wafer fab say 30,000 wafers per month, and that>>>>>

Not likely that this amount of funding is readily available locally in Malaysia today.

<<<<<< doesn't include things like reliable clean power,>>>>>

Right, Tanaga is about as reliable as dead fish. Your sure they stink. We are located in a "high-tech" park and loose power totally 3 -4 times a week (that's just during business hours!) Can't imagine what the situation is in East Malaysia.

<<<<< a good quality DI water supply,>>>>>>>

Read some of Stitch's past posts on the availability of water. Some of the major fabs in the area are suffering multi million dollar losses.

<<<<<<easy access to international airshipping,>>>>>>

Reasonable access.

<<<<<<a covey of captive chem engineers, >>>>>

Don't know how many of the 'long house' people (Iban) have degrees in chem. there must be some though with the petroleum industry so prevalent in the area.

<<<<<< reasonable network to the world and a sales and technical staff in the country where one's customers are going to be located, and oh yes, customers in search of>>>>>>>

Your guess is as good as mine! ;-)

You talk with knowledge about wafer production and I know you have some practical experience. I would be grateful for any comments you have about that and any links you have to info about the same. especially interested in forecasts and sensitivities to a turn in the market should it ever begin to glimmer on the horizon.

Thanks,
Stitch

P.S. Bernie gave you a better response then I could have on the Interconnect thing.
