Peter, Having now completed my reading of Stefan Kanfer's book, I have one thing to add. Like them or not, they are doing us all at least one big favor: they are keeping the price of high end diamonds up. It's not that the "market" for these gems is still good; DB is hoarding output, and I'll bet they they have a billion right now. So, how long can they last until Asia, and others come back to normal? Some of you may have better guesses than I. I wrote to Mr. Kanfer; here is his reply: "I have not written on De Beers (since 1993), but have kept up with the company and its movements at the Africana dept. of Yale University, where various activities are tracked. Those who suggest that the spots of the leopard are unlikely to change seem to me well advised. SK" PHIL
