The funds I hold are indexes : Largecap, Largecap Value, Smallcap, Smallcap Value, International Largecap. All from Vanguard. Plus a couple of managed funds for International smallcap growth and the US high tech sector. That makes it 7 of them.

I also hold Diebold. I like their long-term prospects and I also like them for their long dividend-increase record.

I Don't think you can say that 8 funds is too many without someone providing their complete investment profile. Many people are quite suitable owning many mutual funds. Different funds investing in different asset classes and management style are very important. I don't like balanced funds or growth & income funds either. I will invest with my favorite large cap value manager, small cap value Manager, small cap (momentum aggressive) and so on. I don't want my equity manager investing for income either.
