Memory Yields, Excess Capacity, Silicon for Networks and Lithium Ion Batteries
Discussed in the July Issue Of INFRASTRUCTURE
DALLAS (July 22) BUSINESS WIRE -July 22, 1998--INFRASTRUCTURE, the independent
research and analyst group which provides expert
information on the semiconductor, FPD and related industries, is pleased
to announce that its July issue of the popular newsletter once again includes
several key discussions and featured articles.

In the July issue, Ron Leckie, INFRASTRUCTURE's CEO, discusses the topic
of Memory Yield Management. Leckie quantifies some of today's DRAM yields
and observes that, "There is a significant amount of yield upside left
in 64 Mbit DRAM products, to the point that when the shrinks come out
and yields increase, this will be like giving more free capacity to the
DRAM suppliers." In talking about companies like Advantest; Electro Scientific
Industries (Nasdaq:ESIO); General Scanning (Nasdaq:GSCN); KLA-Tencor (Nasdaq:KLAC);
and Teradyne
(NYSE:TER), he said that "These are the type of companies that will provide
the tools for memory suppliers to analyze/optimize their yields, and achieve
this virtual capacity." He also discusses the software tool suppliers
who will help manufacturers manage their yields. These include not only
the public companies, ADE Corporation (Nasdaq:ADEX); Electroglas (Nasdaq:EGLS);
Informix (Nasdaq:IFMX); KLA-Tencor (Nasdaq:KLAC); and Oracle (Nasdaq:ORCL),
but also some very interesting private companies like IDS Software Systems.

In his monthly Financial Market Commentary column, Carl Johnson, INFRASTRUCTURE's
President, discusses the recent capital spending cuts by Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC),
and their effect on suppliers such as Applied Materials (Nasdaq:AMAT).
In commenting on PMC Sierra
(Nasdaq:PMCS), Johnson said, "However, there are pockets of strength to
be found in the semiconductor business." He added that, "This month's
Corporate Profile of PMC Sierra highlights the strength in silicon products
used to construct of the networking infrastructure."

In a second article on battery technology, "The Promise of Lithium," a
guest writer analyzes this interesting technology. Ron Leckie commented
that, "According to market research firm, Frost & Sullivan, World Lithium
Battery Market revenues should top $2.3 billion in 1997." He added that,
"This rapid growth market should offer some investment opportunities,
but it is fraught with risks. Just look at this month's news of a cameraman's
(lithium) battery blowing up near Chelsea Clinton. This is certainly not
the first incident from a technology which can deliver a higher energy-density
storage than any other material." The article discusses Lithium battery
activities at 3M Corporation (NYSE:MMM); Sony (NYSE:SNE); and Valence
Technology (Nasdaq:VLNC).

I spoke with the people at Infrastructure and they informed me that a followup article, specific to VLNC, is being considered. I have not read the first article referenced in my previous post but I intend to as I am a new subscriber. I was asked not post the article and do not intend to...
