BAP:

You might like to go to their site

sap.com

and look at their half year results. On page 7 is a piece on how they are in conformance with German - GAAP headed for US - GAAP next year. They do note that they do NOT capitalize software but US - GAAP may be a 5 - 6% revenue hit. They do not make clear if this relates to percentage of completion and US - GAAP.

I'm thankful that SAP has none of the interesting accounting practices that BAANF got dinged for.

Hi betty ann poe
the license contract and revenue has nothing to do with implementation of the software. That is paid for separatly and has a separate contract. SAP does not do most implementation work as SAP wants to concentrate on its core competence, being development of the product. That is why an estimated 30 000
consultants for the SAP products worldwide do not work for SAP .
They are independent contractors or work for companies such as Andersen Consulting, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, debis etc
etc.The customer is free to choose whom he wants.
SAP of course has the problem that many consultants are not really that good. That is why SAP has the TeamSAP concept, where the
customer can give implementation to a third party and have an SAP employee (consultant) keep a watch over what is being done.

One of the secrets of SAP's success is that SAP concentrates on the products annd keeps consultancy by SAP employees to a minimum, thus allowing many others also to earn money off of the SAP products. Only a first year student of economics would think that SAP could do all of that work, just by hireing 30 000 consultants ;-)
