Motorola opens center for nonvolatile memories

AUSTIN, Tex. -- Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) here announced today that it has created the Nonvolatile Memory Technology Center to consolidate the sector's related technological expertise under one organization.

SPS will realign resources to increase efficiency and focus its efforts on the development of nonvolatile memories optimized for the Consumer Systems, Wireless Subscriber, Networking, and Communications Systems groups. The NVM Center in Austin will develop high-density/high-speed flash, low-voltage/low-power flash, byte-erase EEPROM on selected process platforms, and emerging technologies such as magneto-resistance random-access memory (MRAM)

The center will be the interface with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. for the recently announced collaboration on nonvolatile memory technology (see July 17 story).

With NVM technology, Motorola can offer its customers "the basic building blocks upon which to design their products, which we refer to as DigitalDNA," said C.D. Tam, senior vice president and general manager. Added Bill Pfaff, director of the NVM Center, "Together with the Advanced Systems Technology Lab and CPU/MPU Core Technology Centers, Motorola provides the core competencies required for the rapid development of system-on-a-chip solutions."

(and nice close today.)
