> is that all that you can say ?

There is a lot more I could say, but why? If you still have the
opinion that "since it hasn't been done it can not be done" it
is no use to continue.

Yes, there have been a lot of failed attempts to compete against
M$. Sun saw all of those. Don't you think they thought about
it before they started all of this? You think you're the only
one that knows M$ has killed all competition along the way?

I think sun is EXTREAMLY smart in this case. They are fighting
a battle in M$ territory. I don't know about you but if there
is going to be a battle between me and my neighbor I would rather
it be in their house so I can tear up their stuff and not in mine.

Besides, Sun needs the recognition. As long as they are fighting
M$ and not hurting their core business they keep growing and
growing.

And I still say, who knows that they won't win? Maybe
their plan is to keep M$ distracted from everything else that
is going on.

Some great points by all ... my two cents:

NC's - great as green screen replacements (3270, VTx00 etc) and
probably won't amount to much more due to cheap PC's.
- however embedded/personel java looks promising.

MSFT - they own the desktop hands down; including Graphic
workstations now with NT + Pentium II
- Linux is the only real desktop contender to MSFT; INTC
is interested in helping this cause.
- in the Server space MSFT doesn't have a clue:
low reliability and scalability; David Cutler should
have just cloned VMS and he would be done by now!

SUNW - will profit from UNIX unification; they are becoming
the standard and choosen UNIX both in a workstation
and server environment
- need to expand consulting especially in HA; look at
how much $ DEC AND ORCL earn from consulting > $1 billion.
- consulting should also focus on NT INTEGRATION not
bashing; the corporate world is going to play with NT
for a while at least and are looking for integation
consulting.
- Java's there but needs a performance and reliability
boost ; Sun needs to sink real engineering dollars into
doing this to win corporate confidence.
