Millennium Bug May Spark UK Nuclear Plant Accidents - Report

Dow Jones International News Service via Dow Jones

LONDON (Dow Jones)--A serious accident may occur at U.K. nuclear plants if
computers fail to recognize the year 2000, an official from industry regulator
the Health and Safety Executive warned.

David Hunns, head of the HSE's Nuclear Safety Directorate, said the millennium
bug has been found in four alarm and monitoring systems at U.K. nuclear sites,
according to a report in New Scientist magazine published Thursday.

This could disrupt power supplies, disable safety systems and even cause a
radiation leak, New Scientist said.

Hunns' concerns were highlighted in a recent paper given to a private meeting
of European nuclear regulators in Slovenia. The paper said the bug could cause
simultaneous failures in nine different types of safety systems and may cause
cooling and lubrication systems to fail.

"This would, of course, place in jeopardy the maintenance of safe shutdown.
Erroneous information may be generated which, if not checked, may result in
unsafe actions," the paper warned.

An HSE spokesman told New Scientist he hoped Hunns' paper would generate
dialog between European nuclear regulators. He added that many items at British
nuclear plants are currently being screened for the fault.
