Smuggled Viagra Turning Up in China

BEIJING (AP) - Chinese police have arrested a pharmacist for selling smuggled pills of the much talked about impotence drug Viagra, the Beijing Morning Post reported Wednesday.

Li Zhi, a pharmacist in southwestern Chengdu city, admitted to selling Viagra on a ''very limited basis,'' according to the newspaper.

Li sold the little blue pills for $36 each, a fantastic sum by Chinese standards and more than three times the going rate in the United States.

Li claimed the bottle of Viagra found in his possession had been given to him by a Hong Kong pharmaceuticals dealer as a gift, the newspaper said.

Viagra has not been declared safe by Chinese health authorities and its sale is illegal. Black markets for Viagra have sprung up throughout Asia, although traditional cures for impotence abound.
