AMZN upside "surprise" baked in, no? Analysts lowered so dramatically while 'Net stock were booming that it seems to me Amazon has already baked in a "surprise". Even -$.30 vs.-$.15 year ago would be pretty bad news, but analysts have cooked up -$.43. Customer volume will be up (at this valuation it had better be) and the conference call will be sweetness and light. Meanwhile profitability is pushed well into 2000 or 2001 and we don't know how much better that profitability will be relative to any other book and music seller.

NY Times article neglected to point out that in the book business, a seller can simply return unsold inventory to the publisher. While you have carrying cost, that carrying cost is not associated with any real risk that it will increase, since inventories can simply be returned for cash.
