Degrees mean nothing when it comes to human emotional development and behavior. Any contact with the degreed academic class is prima facia evidence of that.

-LACIE: LaCie first to market DVD-RAM solutions for PC and Macintosh

M2 PRESSWIRE-22 July 1998-LACIE: LaCie first to market DVD-RAM solutions for PC and Macintosh (C)1994-98 M2
COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- SCSI DVD-RAM solutions to ship in volume in September 1998 Exceptional 5.2 GB capacity per media

-- Reads CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-ROM media

LaCie today announced that it is to enter the DVD-RAM arena in force with both PC and Macintosh desktop solutions.
LaCie has been working with its partners to develop DVD-RAM SCSI products that will begin shipping in volume
September 1998.

The new DVD-RAM drives will enable 5.2 GB of data to be written to a single disc. Each disc will mount like a floppy on the
desktop, yet deliver exceptional reliability and performance.

LaCie's DVD-RAM solutions combine new levels of performance with a very competitive price, making them ideal for design
and pre-press professionals as well as departmental network back-ups. For example, a LaCie DVD-RAM drive has the
equivalent performance as a 20X CD-ROM, yet has far greater capacity and a much lower cost-per-megabyte.

LaCie now considers the time is right to enter the DVD-RAM market. Herve Petit, World-wide Communications Director for
LaCie commented, "Until now, the industry has been unable to agree on universal standards, delaying investment from vendors
such as ourselves. However with the emergence of DVD-RAM technology we recognise that the best solution for the
desktop is now here. In addition, with fourth-generation DVD-ROM drives coming this autumn, read compatibility of
DVD-RAM media will be widely available for every desktop, and the market can take full advantage of this technology."

Availability

LaCie has been working with the leading producers of DVD-RAM technology to produce the LaCie DVD-RAM solutions.
Each unit ships complete with cables, the LaCie DVD-RAM software driver for windows and Macintosh, first 5.2 GB
DVD-RAM disc and SCSI card if required. Products will begin shipping 1st of September 1998, with an anticipated street
price of GBP 549.00 before VAT. A choice of 2 media is available: a single sided 2.6 GB DVD-RAM disc, with an
anticipated street price of GBP 18.95, and a double-sided 5.2 GB DVD-RAM disc, with an anticipated street price of GBP
29.95 before VAT.

DVD-RAM - Information for Editors

What is DVD-RAM?:

DVD-RAM stands for Digital Versatile Disc - Random Access Memory, and represents an exceptional development in
rewriteable technology for low-cost, high-reliability and easy-to-use storage. Like CD-ROM technology, DVD-RAM is a
non-magnetic storage solution using the speed and precision of laser optics. With a total capacity of 5.2GB, a single DVD can
hold the equivalent of nearly 3,600 floppy diskettes.

DVD-RAM is the ideal storage solution for graphic and network professionals or other users who need fast, reliable storage
for backup, archiving and data exchange.

Although tape has long been the preferred technology for full system back-ups, DVD-RAM delivers new advantages.
DVD-RAM's large 5.2GB capacity, speed, media durability, and low cost compare favourably to the lower-capacity DAT
and Travan drives. Tape is significantly slower than DVD, is sometimes vulnerable to data loss by magnetic fields, as well as
wear and tear, whereas DVD-RAM media will last for decades.

DVD-RAM's has a class-beating 3 pence per megabyte cost (based on one drive plus three discs).

Compatibility:

With LaCie's DVD-RAM solution, the technology has matured. It conforms to the latest standards of the DVD Forum,
published in the DVD Book (version 1.0). In addition to DVD-RAM media, it can read all existing DVD-ROM titles, as well
as all PD, DVD-R, CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. The upcoming fourth-generation DVD-ROM drives, scheduled
by LaCie for October 98, will also read the DVD-RAM media.

Together this will deliver a storage solution that provides stable, inexpensive, and trouble-free data exchange for graphics and
network professionals, or anyone who needs to transport a lot of data in a readily-accessible format.
