Minister Says Mining Facing Worst Crisis Ever - Chile July 23, 1998

Chile's mining minister Sergio Jimenez said the local mining industry was facing its worst crisis in history as a result of low international copper quotations combined with an unfavorable dollar exchange rate.

Jimenez described the situation as "delicate" because copper had recently touched US$0.71 per pound, a price only comparable to levels registered in 1982.

"However, at that time (1982) we had an entirely different relationship with the dollar that bears no relation to the current situation," the minister said. "It is as if the price today, with respect to 1982, had reached US$0.40."
