EVerything is dead or dying. Blue walks the yard like the lion at the beginning of The Postman, his mouth hangs open pitifully, his stomach drags weakly. He licks the leaves on the shrubs after the sprinklers cut off as if he were never provided with water. Then he collapses on his back in the dirt, legs outstretched. Everyone is sweaty and mean. We've had something like 20 days over 100. No rain in weeks. We're rationing. If you see someone with an even house number watering on an odd day, you can turn them in to the Neighborhood Association Gestapo.

Thomas and I sort of compromised on the Beethoven Battle. I agreed to say that Beethoven was like Janus, facing both directions, if he would be my love slave. It's been an excellent arrangement for over a year now.

CW's girlfriend's brother, who is Ammo's age, plays the trombone. She plays the clarinet. One day they brought their instruments over to the house to have a band. Unfortunately the only song they all knew was the Middle School Fight Song, which is to the tune of On Wisconsin. It was a fascinating arrangement---trombone, clarinet, bass guitar, and drums. Bruckner would have been impressed, I'm sure.

(I got my copies at the airport. It's real!)
