huge step forward for antisense see this release BETHESDA, Md., July 22 (Reuters) - The first in an entirely new class of biotech drugs called "antisense" compounds got the backing of federal advisers Wednesday. The 5-2 vote of confidence means the drug, Isis Pharmaceuticals <ISIP.O> Vitravene (fomivirsen), could be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within months, since it is on a fast track review. Vitravene was recommended for both newly diagnosed cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis or CMV retinitis that has not responded to available drugs. The viral infection hits AIDS patients in the late stages of the disease and can cause blindness. 5-2 vote didn't squeak by, first approval for antisense. Cav

ISIP UP HUGE IN AFTERHOURS TRADING AFTER HUGE ANTISENSE NEWS AFTER THE BELL - Isis Pharmaceuticals rises NEW YORK, July 22 (Reuters) - Shares of Isis Pharmaceuticals <ISIP.O> rose sharply in after-hours trade Wednesday after news that a U.S. advisory panel had backed the company's drug, Vitravene, which is used for a retinal blindness that affects AIDS patients. Isis traded at 17-1/2 on the Instinet system. The stock, which was halted Wednesday for pending news, closed Tuesday at 13-7/16. Starting to see cygs could explode at any real news. Cav
