Here's an interesting article by Jim Jubak on Microsoft investor. The article is entitled "When to hold 'em, when to fold 'em," and it deals in depth with three stocks: Vitesse Semiconductor, Cisco Systems, and Tellabs.

"How do I decide in what groups I want to search for stocks?"

I think it pays to deal with companies in whatever business you yourself are in, one you presumably understand better than the average guy - and probably better than the average Wall Street analyst.

Others will probably disagree, but I don't believe in much diversification. Four or five stocks in a small portfolio is more than enough to keep track of. This necessarily forces one to focus on just a few closely related areas.
