JAPAN CHIPMAKERS CUT PRODUCTION IN BID TO BOOST PRICES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SEOUL, July 22 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Japanese semiconductor
chipmakers have started to cut back on their memory chip production,
following suit of its worldwide competitors.

Industry sources said Wednesday that Japanese chip producing companies
NEC and Hitachi, ranked 2nd and 4th in global production, have decided
to shut down production lines for eight and nine days respectively,
until the middle of next month.

The sources said the supply of chips may now be running on low, with
suspension of production going on worldwide, relieving excessive
supply.

Micron Technology of the United States, suspending operations,
following its recent merger with Texas Instrument (TI), has joined up
with other chipmakers in cutting back output. Those chipmakers that
joined chip production reduction produce about 67 percent of chips made
worldwide.

Industry sources believe that the cuts are working, to raise prices.

Samsung and Hyundai Electronics cut production on two different
occasions.
