Paul, when I went to school, PL/1 was the most-taught language in Computer Science courses. (Although BASIC was probably the most-taught computer language overall.) Before that, Algol was the most-taught language in Computer Science courses.

Academia does NOT have a great record at picking the next popular computer language. C was an abberation. (And, in fact, many schools were dragged into C kicking and screaming.)
