First Virtual cedes to [Alpha ONLINE merchant alliance] CyberCash [Mark Twain]

"...First Virtual Holdings Inc....announced it will urge its 2,000 merchants and 60,000 buyers to sign on with former rival CyberCash Inc., after concluding it was losing the race to win customers.

Dave Ehrenthal, vice president of marketing at the San Diego-based company, said First Virtual will focus its efforts on further developing its messaging technology, which allows companies to conduct transactions via e-mail. The technology is particularly useful for companies involved in direct marketing..."In order to be successful in the secure payments business, you have to reach a critical mass," Ehrenthal said. "CyberCash has reached it, and quite frankly, we didn't achieve the critical mass we had hoped to." ...Analysts said the deal allows First Virtual to make a graceful exit from the online payments arena, while shoring up CyberCash's business at the same time...The arrangement was likely assisted by Softbank Corp., which owns a majority stake in First Virtual and about 8 percent of CyberCash..."

I would argue that while Zack's may be more reputable, the
current analyst consensus of HOLD from Zack's is also
meaningless, particularly since it is only based on one
analyst. Taking both into consideration, one publication
says SELL, while one analyst says HOLD. Neither sounds
very good.
