What about if US market crashes like the Japan bubble of 8 years ago? Meaning go to 10000 then come down to 3500-4500 levels?

If you are holding amazon.com or others like it, you really take a permanent bath. If you are holding Cisco or others like it, you take a drop for now, but the underlying value pulls you back it two years. Check the results of the 1987 crash in 1989. However I think your projection of a 55% drop in the Dow is unrealistic. 25% on a two day drop I could see. Trying to invest based on markets crashes is like trying to drive expecting a car crash. Have Insurance, ie: enough other savings to live on, then get on with your investment program, and enjoy life!
