1) The drug is not yet approved. It got an approval rec from the committee. Not the same thing -- could be months before they get marketing approval.
2) The FDA does not rule on mechanism of action. They judge safety and efficacy. The FDA HAS NOT provided an opinion on whether or not anti-sense works. The opinion of the FDA advisory panel (NOT the FDA) at this point is simply: it looks like the drug is beneficial and reasonably safe.

There are still a lot of disbelievers of anti-sense out there. They all claim to have found problems with the definitive experiments. The regular biostud contributors to this thread can address this better than this stupid chemist can.
