Good point, CJones. I do disagree, however, that killing off the Penny threads would cause SI to shut down. On the other hand, there's some info that you and I don't have:

What percentage of membership do the pennies comprise?

I suspect it's much smaller than non-penny threads based only personal observation. Seems like a lot of the same "penny people" on any thread selected at random. In contrast, open up the INTC, IOM, and COMS threads and there are only a few common faces.

The penny threads do create the bulk of SI's administrative workload&#151as high as 90% of the "trouble" situations, I'm told.

So if a rather small constituency creates 90% of the trouble, the answer is pretty clear.
