Acutally, the idea of dynamic compilation (a mixture of
interpreter and static compilation) is pretty new. It
has only be around for about 10 years or so (mostly in
academia). If JVM with hotspot works as advertised, it will
be a pretty significant step forward in the way we think about
and use compilers and how it will be productized.

A step forward using well proven ideas from the past. THAT sounds like the
"recipe for success" Scott McPealy. The guy that wrote that just got his PhD in
Computer Science last year. Sun isn't trying to experiment with new research
topics, they're trying to define something that works and is solid.
