MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Netscape Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: NSCP - news) today announced the availability of ''My Netscape,'' a free new service of the newly redesigned and expanded Netscape Netcenter 2.0 portal site. My Netscape provides users with a single Internet start page that can be personalized through a combination of Web-based content, small software applications called Weblets, communications applications and other free Netcenter services. By bringing together various Netcenter services -- such as WebMail, Netscape Search, Member Directory, software download, personal bookmarks and address books -- into a single personal page, My Netscape combined with Netscape Communicator becomes a ''personal Internet desktop,'' your homebase on the Web. And My Netscape is accessible from any computer on the Net so users can access their personal Internet desktop from wherever they go.
Through a smart and highly customizable Web interface, users can easily add, delete, and organize any combination of content, applications and Netcenter services by mixing and matching channels -- small windows of Web-based information or simple tools -- on their personal My Netscape page. Some of the new content providers announced separately today include SportsTicker, Reuters, S&P Comstock, Standard & Poor's Web site -- S&P Personal Wealth -- and WeatherLabs. Users will also be able to monitor other channel categories, such as Headline News, Sports, Business, Technology, Finance, Stock Quotes, Family and Entertainment, among others offered through Netscape Netcenter. In addition to the leading Netcenter content now available in today's first-generation service, Netscape plans to aggressively expand its content offerings in the coming months.
''Today's introduction of My Netscape is the culmination of Netscape's aggressive campaign to build up Netcenter through a host of free new content and services,'' said Mike Homer, executive vice president and general manager of Netscape's Netcenter division. ''Now for the first time, consumers and business users of Netcenter can customize their own personal Internet desktop to take advantage of all the new content and services in a single place on the Web. As Netscape continues to forge new partnerships and roll out new content and services, My Netscape will grow into the best place for people to start their Web experience.''
My Netscape offers people a personalized way to organize, manage and maintain all the Web-based information, applications, and productivity tools they use everyday. It is fast and easy to set up a personal profile and begin using My Netscape. Today users can quickly and easily customize their channels, by selecting content to monitor and track on a daily basis, choosing where to place the channels on their My Netscape page, and selecting the size of each channel window. The simple set-up process also allows users to add services, such as WebMail, a favorite search engine, Netcenter Member Directory, Netcenter professional community services, and even import and export important personal information, including bookmarks, email and address books.
As part of the set-up process, users establish a password for private, security-enhanced access to their personal page that can be viewed from home, the office, or even from the road using any browser connected to the Net. Users will be able to add new Netcenter service offerings or change existing preferences just as easily. The innovative ''look and feel'' of the My Netscape page features several convenient ways to help users customize and easily manage the flow of information through their page. Some of these features include an interactive page layout editor; the ability to preview, minimize and maximize channels; and a Channel Finder, a Netscape guide to all the best channels.
Coupled with Netscape Communicator 4.5, made available this month from the Netcenter portal site, My Netscape is the ideal online companion for the world's leading Internet client software. Users will be able to easily return to their personal page by setting it as the default start-up page or by clicking on the My Netscape button integrated into the Navigator tool bar in Netscape Communicator 4.5. As My Netscape continues to evolve into a tightly-integrated Web-based companion service to Netscape Communicator, the content and applications will become even more tightly integrated with future versions of the Internet client software. In the future, users will be able to plug virtually any type of Web-based content or application into My Netscape, thus enhancing the level of personalization and allowing them to continuously monitor their view of the Net.
My Netscape is designed from the ground up to scale to include hundreds of different content channels, Weblets, and productivity tools, such as the Calculator currently available. As a core piece of the rapidly expanding Netcenter infrastructure, My Netscape will be able to easily add new content channels and services as Netscape continues to build relationships with many of the leading content and service providers on the Web. The frequency of updated content and service offerings will continue to grow allowing users to customize My Netscape to include the best of the Web.
