I know Perry Witkin. He owns the machine in our town. He has 4 all together as it says in the press release. He had bought these years ago (for a big discount, as I understand it). Our machine in Indiana and the one in his home base of Nashville have been busy. His other two installations have not done well. I don't think that it is accurate to say that he has a patient base or a doctor base. The patients who get scans either pay out of pocket or they are fortunate enough to have insurance that pays for it. There are cardiologists who are paid a fee-for-service to interpret the scans. His set-ups have the same struggles as do the Heart scan installations with insurance and physician acceptance. He is a really nice guy and seemingly very bright. I'm sure that he has some plan (re-sell them?)
I know that he is trying to get some of the $60 million in grant money from the National Heart Lung Institute. He felt that having 4 machines would help; now he has 8.
At any rate, I am not knocking the deal from Imatron's perspective, but I wanted to share a bit of what I know. My cardiology buddies know him a lot better because they arranged for him to put his fourth machine here. If I learn anything from them, I'll pass it on.
