Travis...I think we'll be just fine in Q4. If we
1)lower the unit shipments for the Pro line
2)increase the laptops units (higher AUP on them is almost guaranteed this Q)
3) increase unit number for entry level and lower AUP

I think the net result is that we get a nice jump in both unit number and revenue. Furthermore the inventory of Pros in the channel would be cleared and ready for the new desktops in a couple months. (similar to PB inventory clearing in Q1)

Much of our result will depend on the unit shipment of iMacs. But things look really good to me right now. I'll share some charts and estimates with you in private.

Good luck today..

Eric

Partly, the conversion to iMac manufacturing has already happened, so the supply of other machines will be impacted by that. I don't think there's enough there to worry about (any more than usual, anyway). With Apple's new improved inventory management, I don't think they'd be slashing prices without something headed for the pipeline soon.

Meanwhile, we've retreated close to pre-earnings market valuation, which I think means shopping time. I thought we'd be back in the 34s sooner, but that just convinces me more that you can't really time the market. Apple may not be the bargain it was at 14 in December, but its still a bargain.

"<mental note: PCData analyst runs on IgnorantOS.>" Eric - that one had me laughing out loud and drawing quizzical stares from officemates.

I can just see the headlines next month: "Apple's sales fell this month to 9.3%, another market share decline for the troubled computer maker..."

<mental note: Market valuation software runs on IgnorantOS.>

I am getting worried that Q4 is going to be a bit tough. iMac's won't be shipping for half the Quarter

My thoughts exactly.

Desktop PowerMac G3s are expected to be constrained.

This might actually be good. I had expected G3 demand to taper down significantly. If they are scarce, this means either demand is still there or production has gone down as production lines are converted to iMacs (has this happened?).

Anyone foresee any trouble from the AIM supply of PPC chips?

What with MOTO's "not a priority" kinda comments and rumours to the effect that IBM's hardware divisions may be in trouble and less than enthusiastic promotion of the PPC on Macintosh. Add to that the MOTO/IBM split on the manufacturing plant (I think there's more to that), MOTO's copper AMD affair...the whole thing makes me a little uneasy.

34.75. I think we hit bottom cap'n...

Here's an article that touches on the subject: news.com.

Frankly, I'm a little suspicious of reports of Power Mac shortages in view of Apple's recent decision to lower prices. Those two "facts" just don't correlate.
