Tegal Receives Production Reorder From Major Japanese Customer for FeRAM Application

PETALUMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 1998--Tegal Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:TGAL - news) announced today that one of Japan's largest and most diversified chipmakers placed a production reorder for a Tegal 6500 series etch system to be used in the manufacture of non-volatile FeRAM (ferroelectric random access memory) devices.

Orders for such tools typically range between $1.8 million and $3.0 million. The tool is scheduled to ship by the end of September.

FeRAM devices are used in smart cards and other memory applications where battery backup is not feasible or desirable. These devices employ ferroelectric and related electrode materials that are particularly difficult to etch. Tegal believes it has unique capabilities in etching these emerging materials.

''This order is further evidence that our customers are moving their emerging materials programs out of their process development labs into production,'' noted Michael L. Parodi, Tegal's president and CEO.

''We are pleased that one of our major customers has reordered our patented 6500 series system for this challenging application. We believe that this reorder demonstrates the unique performance results we have been able to deliver in etching these emerging materials in a production environment.''

Tegal Corp., headquartered in Petaluma, Calif., is a leading designer and manufacturer of plasma etch systems used in the production of integrated circuits (ICs), particularly in the burgeoning emerging materials area. Etching is a key process and must be repeated multiple times in the production of these devices.

Tegal markets and services its systems in all major regions of the world. More information is available on the Internet at www.tegal.com.
