If you look at the recent page hits numbers that have been reported by independent tracking and reporting companies, the impact of B &N's and Borders recent push becomes much more apparent. Both of these "brick and mortar" retailers have still had their internet training wheels on until recently. They did little advertising and had clunky sites. After throwing more money at the sites, they now are more capable of competing for on-line sales.

B & N's page hit numbers increased greatly last month. They rose to a level still just 1/2 that of Amazon.com and sales are likely to show much less than that rate of growth. Still, the trend is apparent; amazon.com will meet with increasing competition and it is costing them more to acquire new customers.

I did not realize that.

BKS had a major campaign in April in my city via Charles Osgood and the CBS radio network (thus probably a national campaign). I am surprised that those pathetic numbers (14% increase on a small base) included April. Still, we'll have to wait for the next quarterly report to really know how BKS is doing.

Thanks,
Tom
